What Is Vans OTW?

What Is Vans OTW?

American footwear giant Vans has long been a staple in wardrobes around the world. Originally popularized by skateboarders, BMX riders, and other action sports athletes, Vans has since transcended its subcultural roots to become a global icon embraced by people from all walks of life. What began as a small local shoe company has evolved into a powerful symbol of creativity, individuality, and self-expression. Best known for its timeless silhouettes—like the Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, and Authentic—Vans continues to resonate with a diverse audience, from skaters and musicians to artists and everyday wearers, offering footwear that combines durability, style, and classic design.
Vans has remained culturally relevant by connecting with diverse communities through collaboration—but they’ve taken a non-traditional path to do so. While the core Vans brand stays clean, slightly more conventional, and less experimental, the company uses its sub-brand, OTW, to lead the charge on innovative projects that have been turning heads since its inception.

OTW, Vans’ self-proclaimed “center of excellence,” is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of both product design and brand experience. Its rise coincides with the phasing out of the long-standing Vans Vault line, which held a strong presence for 20 years. At first glance, the difference between Vault and OTW might not be obvious to the average shopper. The core concept behind both is similar, but their philosophies diverge in subtle but meaningful ways.

According to Vans Vice President Ian Ginoza, OTW represents a shift in mindset—one grounded risk-taking, curiosity, and a drive to explore new territory. It’s less about heritage and more about what’s next.
What’s staying the same? The commitment to high-profile partnerships and collaborations. Vault made waves with names like Gucci and JJJJound. OTW is continuing that legacy, aligning with cutting-edge fashion labels such as Satoshi Nakamoto, HommeGirls, and Gallery Dept. But OTW is also venturing beyond collaboration, embracing innovation through design and technology—whether reimagining classic Vans silhouettes or introducing entirely new ones like the Old Skool 36 FM.
